SERLO's Top Ten Concerns with AOPA
The Agricultural Operation Practices Act (AOPA) is the legislation that governs over CFOs.
Prior to the OAPA, rural municipalities began denying CFO proposals due to public concern over health and environmental issues.
Stating, "This is not the way we do business", the government eliminated the power of local authorities to approve CFOs. This was done despite overwhelming support for the retention of local decision making processes, as was expressed in public hearings organized by the government throughout the province.
Democratically-elected and accountable decision makers were replaced with government appointed and unaccountable bureaucrats.
Following are the ten top concerns about AOPA:
- AOPA Concern #1: The Application Process
- AOPA Concern #2: Enforcement
- AOPA Concern #3: Manure Application Rates
- AOPA Concern #4: MDS (Minimum Distance Separation)
- AOPA Concern #5: Manure Storage
- AOPA Concern #6: Winter spreading
- AOPA Concern #7: NRCB is both the approval and regulatory agency
- AOPA Concern #8: Feedlot Slope
- AOPA Concern #9: Manure stockpiling
- AOPA Concern #10: Insufficient Monitoring
