AOPA Concern #5: Manure Storage

Minimum storage

Minimum storage for liquid manure is only 9 months, which is not enough given the unpredictable weather in Alberta. Storage should be for a minimum of 18 months to accommodate for any unforeseen situations.

No covering required

Manure storage facilities are not required to be covered although covers are effective in minimizing emissions/odours and maintaining nutrient content

Reduced requirements

Clay liners are a design requirement to ensure adequate protection of ground water sources. The 2006 regulatory amendments have reduced the requirements for clay liner specifications, which may increase the risk of groundwater contamination.
